ATP 500 – Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell (ground)

The clay season is heating up. After the Monte Carlo Masters, the prestigious Barcelona 2022 tennis tournament awaits. The favourite to win Barcelona 2022 has been unchanged for sixteen years and is of course Rafael Nadal, who has won 12 times.

The Barcelona Open, currently sponsored by Banc Sabadell, is an ATP 500 level tournament held every season on clay surfaces. In terms of importance, it is the second tennis tournament in Spain after the Madrid Masters, which takes place a couple of weeks later.

It’s also the most important event on Barcelona’s social calendar, providing a great opportunity to catch some of the best tennis action of the year on the clay courts.

The tournament was founded in 1953. The new competition is the successor to the Barcelona International Championships first held in 1903, an inter-club competition featuring the world’s leading tennis players, as well as spring and autumn internationals. To immortalise the winning image, the tournament also featured an iconic trophy donated by Carlos Godo Valls, Count Godot. It is the oldest tennis tournament in Spain and the second most important Spanish event on the ATP tour after the Madrid tournament. The event is usually held in the last week of April to give tennis players a comfortable environment in which to play when temperatures are not yet so hot in Barcelona. Rafael NADAL, who competed here for the first time as a 16-year-old and for whom Real Club de Tennis Barcelona has become his second home, has won a record 12 titles in Barcelona.

The competition has a prize pool of $2,510,900.

The tournament has been won in different years by Bjorn Borg, Mats Wilander, Thomas Muster and Marat Safin. Rafael Nadal has won the local event ten times.
