The Hassan II Grand Prix is a professional men’s tennis tournament organised in Casablanca, Morocco in April on clay courts. Since 2009, the tournament belongs to the ATP 250 series with a prize pool of approximately $586,000 and a schedule of 32 players in singles and 16 in doubles.
The ATP Tour 250 is a category of professional tennis tournaments run by the ATP. It includes 39 tournaments, winning any one of which earns a player 250 ATP points in the ATP rankings.
The ATP Tour 2022 is the Association of Tennis Professionals’ Elite World Tour from 1 January 2022 to December 2022.
The Hassan II Grand Prix is the favoured pre-season tournament for tennis players in the top 20 rankings. The Grand Prix has been popular since the late 2000s when it was promoted to the ATP 250. Despite its small international prize money, it is one of the most popular events on the ATP programme.
Venue and timing
The Grand Prix is held each year in Casablanca in April. Matches have been played on the open grass pitches since the tournament’s early days. However, the venues often change, but only when it comes to sports complexes. Casablanca remains the main venue.
Each year, 28 competitors in singles and 16 pairs compete for 250 ranking points. In addition to the prize money, some $450,000 are also awarded in the tournament.
The Hassan II championship matches are most often held in the second week of April, although this has not always been the case. First the tournament was held in February, then it was repeatedly postponed until the fall. It was only after the Grand Prix organisers bought a permanent place on the calendar that the matches began to be played in early April. The tournament has been one of the regular ATP regular season events ever since. Since the early 1990s it has been included in the main world programme.
Interestingly, the championship is named after the former king of Morocco. In the late 1990s, attempts were made by sponsors to change the name, but they were unsuccessful.
The Hassan II Grand Prix is renowned for the fact that hardly anyone has managed to win it more than once. Only a handful have managed to do so. In singles, the first lucky winner was Spaniard Pablo Andújar. In the early 2010s, he won the Grand Prix Cup twice in a row, beating first Italian Potito Starace and then his compatriot Albert Ramos.
In doubles, Robert Lindstedt, Julian Knowle and Horia Tekeu are among the strongest players.
The 2022 Grand Prix Hassan II (ATP-250) will be held from April 4-10 in Morocco, Marrakech, Morocco-Ground – 28S/16Q/16D.
